Vocabulary One Needs While In Madrid

As promised to Rachel a while ago, here is brief list of Spanish words you should know if you want to visit Madrid. Most of the words are slang you’d never learn in a classroom in the US (for good reason at times).

Cagarse: (Verb) 1. To shit, to shit oneself.

Dar una hostia: (Idiom) 1. To hit (someone) really hard. [An example would be, "te voy a dar una hostia", which means "I am going to hit you really hard".]

De la hostia: (Whole phrase used as an adjective) 1. Awesome. [An example would be, "es un grupo de la hostia", which means "they're an awesome band".]

De puta madre: (Whole phrase used as an adjective) 1. Fucking awesome. [An example would be, "el disco suena de puta madre", which means "the record sounds fucking awesome".]

Debuti: (Interjection) 1. Cool. [Used alone as a reply as the following snippet of conversation. "A: Vamos a ver 'El Mensajero de Miedo'." "B: Debuti."]

Follar: (Verb) To fuck, but with nearly only a sexual meaning. [An example would be, "eramos amigos que follabamos a veces", which means "we were friends who would fuck at times".]

Genial: (Adjective) 1. Great.

Gilipollas: (Noun) 1. Jackass.

Guay: (Adjective) 1. Cool.

Joder: (Verb) To fuck, but without sexual connotations. [An example would be, "que se joda", which means "he can go fuck himself". The interjection "fuck" in English is said using the infinitive form, "joder", in Spanish.]

Mazo: (Adverb) 1. A lot. [Used in place of "mucho" in Madrid. Hence, "mola mazo" means "it's really cool".]

Me cago en dios: (Idiom) General sign of frustration. [When you stub your toe, you shout out "me cago en dios".]

Molar: (Noun) 1. To be awesome, to be cool, to rock, etc. [Used like gustar, but can also be used without an indirect object, so that both "no te mola?" ("you don't think it's cool?") and "mola!" ("awesome!") are complete sentences.]

Que ta cagas: (Whole phrase used as adverb) 1. Implies intensity. [Used in phrases like "allĂ hace un frio que te cagas", which means "it's really fucking cold there".]

Puta: (Noun) 1. Bitch. 2. Whore. 3. Fucking [Also used where English would use "fucking" as an adjective: "no quiero comprar tu puto disco." Note that in this use, the masculine form, "puto", matches with masculine words and the feminine form, "puta", matches with feminine words.]

Clearly there’s more, but I’d say that this is a good start.
